With reliance on computers becoming more and more pervasive, the need to lessen the gap between the technology haves and have-nots becomes more and more urgent. That's why I was so pleased to see this story from the BBC (sent along by the incomparable CRA) on portable PCs that cost $100, aimed for students in poorer countries.
To be able to order the "green machines" from the project, led by MIT's Nicholas Negroponte, countries have to order a million of the units at $100 a pop. The machines debuted at the UN Net Summit in Tunis, and it was the first chance for representatives of countries like Thailand and Brazil (who are eager to make the purchase orders) to see the units in action.
